Ansel Adams, Ansel Adams: An Autobiography (Boston, 1985), p. 289

In 1946, Adams received a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship that enabled him to continue the work he had started under the auspices of the Department of the Interior for the Mural Project in 1941-42 (see Lot 45).  The photograph offered here was made with funds from the fellowship in 1947, while traveling with his young son Michael, then fourteen, to Alaska. This project grew into the 1950 publication My Camera in the National Parks (Yosemite and Boston, 1950) and Portfolio II: The National Parks and Monuments (San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1950).

As of this writing, no other prints of this image are believed to have been offered at auction.
