Pen and brown ink and gouache, over black chalk
8¼x 10½in.; (20.5 by 26.9cm.)
Though the subject of the present work remains somewhat elusive the composition can be closely compared to a black chalk study at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, described by von Erffa and Staley as "The Messenger Announcing to Samuel the Loss of the Battle".1
