platter 16 in. (40.5 cm.) long

Vintage Interiors II, Potomac, Maryland
Wolf Family Collection No. 1206 (acquired from the above on February 16, 2004)

The decoration on the present platter and mazarine is identical to, and apparently by the same hand as, a part service in the Collection of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms, U.S. Department of State, Washington D.C., accession no. RR-1990.0016.1-.10, illustrated online: https://www.diplomaticrooms.state.gov/objects/chinese-export-porcelain-orange-fitzhugh-eagle-decorated-part-dinner-service/. The catalogue entry for the lot notes that the service was “purchased and brought to Salem, Massachusetts, by Captain William Orne (1752-1815), owner of the Brigantine Essex of Salem, which returned from the Orient in 1806”. Given the rarity of eagle-decorated orange Fitzhugh, and the unusual depiction of a flower sprig on the shield, and that these piece appear to be painted by the same hand, it might reasonably be assumed the present pieces originally formed part of the William Orne service.
