"Ralph Eugene Meatyard," essay by Guy Davenport, International Center for Photography, New York, 2004, p. 160 (this print)
‘Upon seeing these photographs by Meatyard I was mesmerized by the gaping vortex of reality versus artistic vision laid bare in these straightforward yet arresting images. How is it that a woman in conventional dress - looking just as one imagines a typical housewife and mother looked in the 1950s and 1960s - has become an unsettling and otherworldly creature? The same can be asked of his photographs of children: young becomes old. . . Conventional becomes eerie by means of a small prop. . .’
