Description

Giulio Sanuto (formerly attributed to Battista Franco)

1540 - 1588

Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness (see Bury 1990, no. 10)

Engraving, 1545-55, a good, even impression of this rare print, on laid paper, unframed

sheet: 380 by 307mm 15 by 12⅛in

Formerly attributed to Battista Franco, this subject is now believed to be by Venetian engraver Giulio Sanuto. While the muscular figure is derived from a fresco by Mannerist painter Daniele Ricciarelli, better known as Daniele da Volterra, the landscape is inspired by Albrecht Dürer.
