Acquired by Sigrid Kahle in Pakistan circa 1950s

Acquired from the above in Uppsala, Sweden, 2006

Sigrid Kahle (1928-2013) was a Swedish professor, journalist and author. Her father, Henrik Samuel Nyberg, was a well-known scholar of Semitic languages. Sigrid lived in London and Germany, before moving to Pakistan in the early 1950s with her husband, John Kahle, a German diplomat. Sigrid became involved in the Pakistani National Theatre and supported a variety of young artists. She acquired the current work during her time in Pakistan. The Kahles returned to Germany in 1961, and later lived in Baghdad, Karachi, New Delhi, Tunis and Washington, before settling in Sweden. Sigrid Kahle published a number of books about her father and her life in Asia. In 1997, she became an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University. She hosted an auction at her summer home where the current lot was acquired by the present owner.
