The story of Audemars Piguet began in 1875 when Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet founded the company in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. However, despite working close together, their partnership was not formalised until 1882, when Audemars Piguet was officially registered.

In 1997, as part of their one hundredth anniversary and as tribute to the brand’s founder, Audemars Piguet launched the Jules Audemars collection. Released that same year, the present Grande Sonnerie Carillon embodies Audemars Piguet's traditional horological mastery. Indeed, building upon the brand's heritage in the creation of striking complications, the present watch features a sonnerie function that can be activated by the wearer into a 'Grande Sonnerie' position striking hours and quarters, a 'Petite Sonnerie' function that only strikes the hours or more remarkably, the watch can be set into silence mode. The carillon mechanism strikes the quarters in different tones with three hammers and three different gongs. Moreover, the button placed at 10 o'clock also allows for the repeater to be activated on demand at any given time.
