Description

Kerouac, Jack

Autograph pictorial postcard signed ("Jack XXX") to his girlfriend Lois Sorrells (later Beckwith) in New York City

One page (136 x 86mm), postmark dated July 23 1960; small marginal tears and light soiling.

"Tonight I walk Frisco alone again, wine in coat, to Chinatown." A jovial note, describing clouds in Iowa that appeared to be kissing and saying he will write in September. Kerouac rode the California Zephyr west to California from Chicago, where he would summer with Ferlinghetti at Big Sur.

REFERENCE:

Not in Charters, presumably unpublished

PROVENANCE:

Lois Sorrells Beckwith (Sotheby Parke Bernet, 23 May 1979, presumably part of lot 11, the Kerouac correspondence to Lois Sorrells Beckwith, purchased by the Boston bookseller William Young) — Unnamed consignor, but presumably Young’s widow (Sotheby’s, 15 June 1990, lot 79, the same correspondence)
