Arc-shaped pendants such as the present lot known as huang appear to have been used in several ways to form elaborate necklace assemblages. As part of neck ornaments, they were often strung together in multiple units of three, five, or seven, curving up, with beaded ornaments made of other materials such as agate, while in other occasions, they could be strung curving down, and for other smaller pendant sets, they could be hung from other parts of a garment. See a complete set of necklaces, Western Zhou, with a very similar huang pendant suspending, curving up, at the bottom, illustrated in Yang Boda, Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete collection of Chinese jades], Hebei, 2005, pl. 273.
