Description
Schalenblende Slice
Olkusz, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland
9 x 7½ x ¾ inches (22.9 x 19.1 x 1.9 cm). 12½ inches (31.8 cm) tall on custom metal base.
Schalenblende, from the German words "Schale" and "Blende" meaning "shell ore," in reference to its concentric layers, is a mixture of Sphalerite and Wurtzite that can also contain growths of pyrite and galena. This particular specimen has been polished on its display face to bring out gorgeous hues of toffee, amber, and graphite. In addition to its desirable closed, concentric forms and appealing color, at 9 inches long, this is also an especially large specimen of Olkusz Schalenblende.
