Daum

Brothers Antonin and Auguste Daum, based in Nancy, France, developed an artistic glass production from 1890 employing a myriad of innovative techniques, thus becoming one of the main protagonists of French art glass renaissance which started around 1900. Acid etching was often combined with carving, enamelling and engraving on a single piece of glass, with the most complicated creations often incorporating applied glass elements, such as handles and ornamental motifs in naturalistic forms. Daum was awarded a ‘Grand Prix’ medal during the Universal Exhibition of 1900, cementing their international reputation. After developing its own language of naturalistic ornament associated with the Art Nouveau style, they later excelled in the production of vases and bowls with geometric decoration on thick transparent single-coloured glass interpreting the stylistic changes of the Art Deco.
