Description
A Regency style giltwood and gesso overmantel mirror, late 19th/early 20th century
the inverted breakfront cornice with a 'Trafalgar' frieze surmounting a panel depicting a scene with a lion-drawn chariot, an angel and classically-dressed maidens on an ebonised ground above above three bevelled plates flanked by fluted pilasters with foliate capitals, re-gilt
75.5 by 111cm., 29¾ by 43¾in.
Although Regency in style, the present lots dates to the end of the 19th century or early 20th century. The form was incredibly popular at that time with the form appearing in a number of trade catalogues. See the Hamptons, London, catalogue for 1892 which features several examples of this early revival of Regency design.
The term 'Trafalgar frieze' refers to the repeated ball motif, which is said to be derived, perhaps fancifully, from canon balls.
