Description
A Louis-Philippe gilt-bronze mounted tortoiseshell, brass and tinted horn 'Boulle' marquetry ebonised wood table à écrire, circa 1830
with a red gilt-tooted leather inset top, above a frieze drawer, on cabriole legs
76 by 84 by 58.5cm., 29⅞ by 33⅛ by 23in.
Sotheby's London, 17 March 1989, lot 415.
This writing table from 1830 was bought with fanciful provenance saying the piece had belonged to Lord Nelson at his home Merton Place.
It is interesting to see parallels between the present table and the work of Thomas Parker, a British cabinetmaker based in London who was favoured by the Prince Regent. He was established at 19 Air Street, Piccadilly from 1808-17 and then at 22 Warwick Street, Golden Square from 1817-27 and finally at 32 Warwick Street until 1830 after which date the firm closed. See for example a table sold at Replica Shoes 's, London, 28 March 2017, lot 435 (£28,750), also attributed to Parker and presenting the same hallmarks as the present including the overall shape, the mask mounts to the corners of the legs and of the top, the mask mounts to the sides, the mounts to the border of the top and drawer.
