Description

A French gilt-bronze and painted porcelain three-piece clock garniture, circa 1870

decorated with figures amongst flowering branches, the clock in the form of a pagoda, the arched 4½-inch dial striking a gong, with Roman numerals, flanked by columns entwined dragons and a lion mask, marked 'VD / 1758-23-2' and '1758-31' to the back of mechanism, together with a matching pair of vases similarly decorated, on claw feet, marked 'VD' to the underside

Clock: 49 by 31 by 18cm., 19¼ by 12¼ by 7⅛in.

Vases: each: 37 by 14cm., 14½ by 5½in.

The extraordinarily whimsical clock which forms a part of this garniture was bought as a wreck by Freddie. He had the piece lovingly restored for the Japanese Room at Garden Lodge and cleverly found the vases to match.
