An Anglo-Chinese teak and walnut travelling/architect's chest, second quarter 18th century

 

the adjustable hinged top with retractable bookrest and brass candle slides, above a fitted frieze drawer with later gilt-tooled leather inset writing slide above an arrangement of drawers and hinged inkwells to right-hand drawer return, above steel lopers with brass pulls, the panelled drawer front centred around a brass handle with concealed spring-loaded escutcheon, the cupboard doors below similar, opening to reveal an arrangement of pigeonholes, folio slides and walnut-veneered drawers, one short drawer with lockable sliding compartment, the returns with brass carrying handles, on a plinth base with concealed brass castors
