Description

A celadon jade axe, yue

Neolithic period, Liangzhu culture

12.7 cm

Ku Ngar Antique Limited, Hong Kong, 27th January 1996.

The present yue origionally should include two holes for easy fixation. Similar yue excavated from the site of Liangzhu culture were often found with the upper hole partially missing. Compare one Liangzhu-culture jade yue in similar shape of the present lot’s lower part, and with half of the upper hole preserved, now in the Zhejiang Antique Archaeology Institute, illustrated in illustrated in Liangzhu and Ancient China: The 5000 Year Civilization Demonstrated by Jades, Palace Museum, Beijing, 2019, p. 171, cat. no. 56.
