Description

Council of Trent. Index librorum prohibitorum cum regulis confectis per patres a Tridentina synodo delectos, auctoritate sanctiss. d. n. Pii IIII, pont. max. comprobatus. Rome: Paolo Manuzio, [after 24 March] 1564

First official printing of the Index of Prohibited Books, as issued by the Council of Trent, along with the rules governing the listings. While the debates during the Council had aimed to moderate the previous restrictions, the published version of the Index only showed minor alterations. The final rule specified the examination of manuscripts before printing with an imprimatur to be included in the printed work, and also the examination by officials of the stock of bookshops and any imports, in order to control all aspects of book circulation.

4to (191 x 128 mm). Roman type, 28 lines plus headline. collation: A-I4: 36 leaves. (Semicircular dampstain in upper margins, some moderate spotting.)

binding: Nineteenth-century vellum over pasteboard (195 x 134 mm), morocco lettering-pieces. (Labels chipped, some soiling.)
