Yutaka Sone (b. 1965, Shizuoka, Japan) is a contemporary Japanese artist best known for his paintings, sculptures, and installations. Throughout his practice, Sone combines urban and natural elements to examine societal traditions and question humanity’s shifting relationship to nature.
Sone studied architecture at the Tokyo University of Arts, gaining an understanding of civic engineering that is evident in the artist’s well-known marble sculptures of city layouts.Transferal of cultural concepts onto natural materials and vice versa is a common thread through Sone's work, ranging from macroscopic snowflakes carved out of monumental crystals to images of palm trees painted on flags.
His work has been met with widespread critical acclaim, resulting in numerous international exhibitions at spaces such as the Parasol Unit for Contemporary Art in London, the Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland, and The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, and is featured in the collects ions of the The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others. Sone currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and has exhibited with David Zwirner gallery in New York.
