The inscription inside the cover reads: “Presented to Major Benjamin Wolfe by his brother officers, Richmond Virginia 1794”
Benjamin Wolfe, Jewish emigrant from Germany to America in 1774, served under Washington, reaching the rank of Major. He rejoined the army and commanded troops in Virginia in 1812. He was a member of the Common Hall, and with his political connections, secured a burial plot for the local Sephardic congregation at Beth Shalom House of Peace. His son Udolfo came to New York in 1825 and expanded the family liquor firm Wolfe & Co. importing Schnapps from Germany and Schiedam in Holland.
