The Desperate Hours was adapted for the stage from Joseph Hayes's 1954 novel about three escaped convicts. It enjoyed a successful run at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, winning three Tony Awards at the 1955 ceremony. Paul Newman played the part of Glenn Griffin, the leader of the trio of escapees.
