Description

Pauline Knip and Coenraad Jacob Temminck

Les pigeons. Par Madame Knip... premier peintre d'histoire naturelle de S.M. l'Impératrice reine Marie-Louise. Paris: for the author and Garnery, [1808-] 1811

Folio (557 x 367mm.), half-title, 87 etched plates, partly printed in colour and finished by hand after Knip by César Macret, contemporary red morocco-backed boards, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, leaves uncut, a few plates cropped at outer margins, spotted and browned at extremities

This first volume was issued in fifteen livraisons with text by Temminck. It was originally to be entitled Histoire naturelle générale des pigeons, but Madame Knip appropriated the publication from Temminck at the ninth livraison and issued a new title. Only twelve copies of the work were approved by Temminck and these all bore the original title. A second edition of the first volume was issued, with alterations, on the publication of the second volume. This copy is without the very rare second volume published in 1838-1843.
