FIRST EDITION, folio (535 x 360mm.), chromolithographed title-page, 25 chromolithographed plates heightened with gum arabic, lithographed dedication leaf, letterpress text, 16 lithographed vignettes on india paper pasted into text, original green morocco-backed boards, title stamped in gilt on upper cover, some spotting and foxing
The magnificent gardens depicted include those at Trentham Hall, Enville Hall, Bowood House, Alton Towers, Elvaston Castle, Shrublands Hall, Woburn Abbey, Worsley Hall, Eaton Hall, Holkham House, Castle Howard and many others. Brooke was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy and British Institution in the period between 1853 and 1864. He writes in the preface: “It is the result of years of labour, and it is almost needless to add, has been completed at no small trouble and expense".
