painted with Hebrew names, pewter cover with cast coin of Joseph II and engraved date 1788 flanking initials


Height 9⅜in. (23.7 cm)

The names inscribed on the sides in Hebrew are Keila, Pesah, and Meir.

Joseph II (1741-1790), Holy Roman Emperor, was sole ruler of the Habsburg lands from 1780 until his death.  Eldest son of Empress Maria Theresa, brother of Marie Antoinette, he was an enlightened monarch who abolished serfdom, emancipated the Jews, established religious equality before the law, and supported freedom of the press.
