Description

A German Silver Kiddush Cup, maker's mark GS in oval probably for Gottlieb Schuch, Augsburg, 1737-1739

octagonal bowl engraved with strapwork and Hebrew blessing, faceted baluster stem, marked on bowl and foot, repairs

Height 4⅜in. (11 cm)

The Hebrew inscription around the rim reads, “So Moses declared to the Israelites the set times of the Lord” (Lev. 23:44).

Based on the inscription, this cup was presumably used for Kiddush on the festivals, rather than on the Sabbath.

Gottlieb Schuch was born in 1701, became a master in Augsburg in 1732, and died in 1748.
