This chest on frame is a very important document to the transfer of design from urban Rhode Island city and its interpretation by regional rural craftsmen.  Hathaway's design follows many of the trait used by Newport cabinetmakers but diverges in his design of the frame's legs which have broader knees and thinner feet at found on known Newport pieces.
