This unusually pictorial cameo follows a subject frequently represented in Renaissance and later prints. See Antonio Tempesta’s interpretation of the subject from 1606 (cf the print in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no. 51.501.3919), or Gerard van der Gucht’s circa 1725 engraving of the same subject (see the print in the British Museum, London, inv. no. 1859,0709.672).

Tassie records a number of engraved gems representing the subject, including one owned by Stosch (no. 570). The present intaglio is close, but not identical, to Tassie nos. 5791-5793.

James Tassie recense différentes gemmes gravées illustrant le sujet, dont une appartenant à Stosch (n° 570). Ainsi, la présente intaille en creux se rapproche sans être identique des numéros 5791-5793 de Tassie.
