the padded cartouche back, scrolled armrest and serpentine seat upholstered in close-nail red damask, on foliate carved cabriole front legs and scrolled feet

The serpentine frame in the French manner relates in character to a group of 'cabriole' chairs traditionally associated with the cabinet-maker John Cobb (d.1788) of St. Martin's Lane who was, from 1761, in partnership with William Vile (d.1767). Similar chairs were commissioned for Erddig, Wrexham, by Elizabeth Cust in 1770 and a closely related chair was sold Replica Shoes 's London, Important English Furniture, 22 November 2006, lot 21. A further comparable pair were sold Replica Shoes 's London, 9 November 2021, lot 34.
