Description

A pietra dura bonbonniere with silver-gilt mounts, Phipps, Robinson & Phipps,

London, 1809

circular, the porphyry-lined malachite lid centred with an agate butterfly with differently coloured wings in orange and striated grey, possibly Florentine or Russian, the underside of pale dusty pink agate, fully hallmarked

7cm., 2⅞in. diameter

Phipps, Robinson & Phipps, as well as the previous partnership of Phipps & Robinson specialised in silver-mounted objects of a variety of materials, such as glass, ostrich eggs, coconuts etc. Relatively little is known about them so far, other than the fact that they also specialised in silver small work, such as wine labels, and that they were working in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
