Antonia Gurkovska garnered attention as a young artist for her unconventional approach to mixed media, and her post-minimal paintings. Utilizing a wide range of materials including vinyl, mesh, and bubble wrap to cover her canvases prior to painting, Gurkovska treats the surface as both sculpture and substrate. The resulting work often bears a highly tactile quality, owing to the impasto-like applications of heavy pigment and the substantial base to which it has been applied.
Antonia Gurkovska’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Center for Contemporary Art Bania Starinna, Povdov; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro; and Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago among others.
