Portrait of a Woman in an Evening Dress

signed and dated: Paul Troubetzkoy / 1921, and stamped: CIRE / A. VALSUANI / PERDUE

bronze, dark brown patina

55.5cm., 21⅞in.

American Private Collection

This elegant bronze reflects the glamour and optimism of the roaring twenties. The statuette is dated to 1921 and was likely produced in America, as Troubetzkoy travelled to New York in 1914 and remained there when the First World War broke out. During this time in his career, he produced a wide collection of portrait statuettes of American celebrities and aristocrats.

The present bronze epitomises Troubetzkoy society portraits and relates to other portraits such as the Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna, Marquise Luisa Casati, and Edith Rockefeller to name a few. This portrait statuette is a rare cast and a particularly beautiful example, with a fine waxy surface. The plaster version is in the Museo del Paessaggio, Verbania (inv. T n. 55).
