Description

The Property of the Marquess of Lothian

A Scottish George II carved giltwood overmantel mirror, second quarter 18th century, in the manner of Francis Brodie

with triple bevelled plates within a strapwork and acanthus cushion frame between eagle headed scrolled stiles

60.5cm. high, 145cm. wide; 1ft. 11¾in., 4ft. 9in.

Probably William Kerr, 2nd Marquess of Lothian (1661 - 1722)
Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian, Inventory, 1777, p.1, possibly in the Two Beded Room; 'Chimney Glass [with] two sconces'
Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian, Inventory, 1901, p.76, in the Upper Hall; ‘Chippendale oblong mantel mirror'
Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian, Inventory, 1930, p.68, in the study; 'A Queen Anne chimney mirror with Vauxhall plates in gilt wood frame carved eagle head & foliage 4ft6 x 2ft'
The form of the present overmantel relates to an example almost certainly by Francis Brodie's at Dumfries House, Ayrshire. Brodie's bill at Dumfries House lists 'a Chimney Mirror do frame £6 6 to a pair of carved brass arms 10.' The 'do' in this description relates to the entry directly above for 'a Sconce Glass the frame carved and guilt in burnish gold'. Like the offered lot the Dumfries mirror features three overlapping plates and scrolled stiles. The mirror can be seen in the Christie's sale catalogue for Dumfries House, 13 July 2007, Vol. II, lot 257.
