This panoramic view of Tivoli is one of around 30 views of the picturesque town painted by Vanvitelli between 1691 and the third decade of the 1700s. Giuliano Briganti (see under Literature) dates this work to the latter part of the artist's career. Unlike other views of the town, which exist in several versions, this work depicts an original composition, looking across the valley of the Aniene river and showing the town from a greater distance.

A related drawing of this work is in the Certosa e Museo di San Martino, Naples.1
