Clennell worked as a watercolour painter and wood engraver, firstly in Northumberland and later in London; his watercolours seldom appear on the market.
There is a comparable watercolour, in terms of subject and execution, held at the Yale Centre for British Art.1 That work is inscribed: Ferry boat Newcastle on Tyne.
