Takahashi Shotei (Hiroaki, 1871-1945)
Pre and post-earthquake editions of Evening Shower at Takaido (Takaido no yudachi)
Taisho - Showa period, 20th century
each a woodblock print, the first with gourd-shaped artist's seal Shotei, the second with square artist's seal Shotei, both titled to the upper left as above, no publisher's mark but both published by Watanabe Shozaburo, the first circa 1920, the second circa 1930s
Both vertical mitsugiriban: each 37.1 x 16.2 cm., 14⅝ x 6⅜ in.
Yudachi [lit. evening 'upright'] denotes a particular type of rainfall. Associated with the summer season, it is thought that the word may have derived from the observable phenomena of cumulonimbus clouds ‘standing upright’ in the sky during a sudden shower.
