It is rare to find a sancai-glazed equestrian preserved in such good condition, with detailed intricate modeling of the trappings on the horse's face, and with such a pronounced naturalistic expression on the rider's face. The combination of chestnut-brown, amber, camellia-leaf green and opulent imported cobalt-blue is also rare to find, indicating the high status of the individual for whom it was made.

The dating of this lot is consistent with the result of Oxford authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test result no. 566b722.
