Two American Flame Stitch Needlework Pocketbooks

Both worked in the Irish stitch in crewel wool. The smaller pocket with stitched initials ER and a note inscribed directly on the interior sleeve Made by Elizabeth Rhoads who married Thomas Smedley of Upper Providence, 6-20-1776; and another note inscribed on paper Made by Elizabeth Rhoads of Marple, who married Thomas Smedley in 1776. / Deposited by Gilbert Cope.

The Rhoads and Smedley families both had deep roots in early Chester County history. Elizabeth was born in 1745 Goshen Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania to John and Elizabeth (Malin) Rhoads who were married in 1731 at the Goshen Friends Meeting. She married Thomas Smedley (1743-1791) in 1776 at the Springfield Meeting, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and they had six children born between 1777 and 1790 in Upper Providence Township Chester County, where Thomas and Elizabeth owned substantial land. Elizabeth died in 1821 and her pocketbook descended in the family.
