This impressive and powerful drawing depicts the mythological story of the Fall of the Giants. A subject painted by many artists, two famous representations are Giulio Romano's, Salone dei Giganti, Palazzo del Te, Mantua and also Perino del Vaga's ceiling fresco in the Palazzo dei Principi, Genoa.

In the present sheet we witness Jupiter in the clouds hurling his thunderbolts upon the giants who are attempting to overthrow him. Ademollo has captured both the power and struggle of this myth, producing a dramatic and bold drawing. Luigi Ademollo trained in Milan and Rome and at the age of twenty-five travelled to Florence where he remained for the rest of his career. He became one of the leading Neo-Classical painters in Tuscany, executing important commissions in Palazzo Pitti, Pucci and Capponi.

Cet impressionnant et puissant dessin mythologique représente la chute des géants. Deux œuvres de ce sujet, peint par de nombreux artistes, sont tout particulièrement connues : celle du Salone dei Giganti de Giulio Romano, au Palazzo del Te à Mantoue, et la fresque du plafond du Palazzo dei Principi de Perino del Vaga, à Gênes.

Dans le présent dessin, Jupiter, dans les nuages, lance ses foudres sur les géants qui tentent de le renverser. Ademollo a saisi à la fois la puissance et le conflit de ce mythe, dans un dessin dramatique et audacieux. Luigi Ademollo a été formé à Milan et à Rome avant de se rendre à Florence, à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans, où il est resté pour le reste de sa carrière. Il devint l'un des principaux peintres néoclassiques de Toscane, exécutant d'importantes commandes au Palazzo Pitti, à Pucci et à Capponi.
