Description
A parcel-gilt "Papegei", or shooting trophy, of the bowmen guild, unmarked, Germany, dated 1598
the bird holding in its beak a small double chain suspending a shield chased with monogram BW, initials of Burschap (guild) and Westenfeld, limited by a ring engraved with the following inscription in a local dialect close to ancient Dutch « DER BURSCHAP. THO. WESTEN. VELDE. THON. ALDENBERGEI HORT DUSSE VOGEL THO 1598 » that can be roughly translated as "This bird belongs to the guild of Westenfeld (or Western field) in Aldenberge", a small crossbow suspended at the ring, the bird with its claws grasping a branch suspended by a small double chain attached on its back where hung its original chain made of double loops
height 4 23/32 in.; length 7 31/64 in.; 12 cm; 19 cm.
