The Rolex Air King was introduced in 1945, alongside the Datejust, as part of the celebration of the brand's 40th anniversary. The model gained more popularity after 1957 and the presentation of the 5500, which is now considered as a classic from the brand. Later on, the Air King went through further modifications and references, with the 14000 (1989) marking the sapphire crystal and the then new calibre 3000. In 2007, Rolex introduced the modern "6-digit" references Air King, the 114200 with a smooth bezel, 114210 with a rotating bezel and the 114234, such as this lot, with a white gold fluted bezel.
The 114234 was the luxurious version of the Air King, with for the first time a bezel in precious metal. Rolex introduced a selection of new dials for the model. The one considered as the most appealing is the one fitted on this lot. It has a roulette, or concentric, Arabic numerals in bright orange over the grey base. The engine turned center is in shiny grey. The transition between the center and the outer part of the dial is made by the chronometer certification, for the first time appearing on an Air King, written in circle.
The 114234 was part of the last generation of the 34mm Air King. It was officially discontinued in 2014 after 7 years only. In 2016, Rolex introduced the 40mm 116900, bearing the same name but with a radically different spirit.
