3 vols, large 4to (320 x 255 mm). Photogravure frontispiece portrait, numerous photogravure and colored plates, 4 folding handcolored maps, photographic text illustrations, half-titles. Publisher's buckram-backed green cloth gilt, top edges gilt; extremities rubbed, corners worn, spines darkened, some edge fading to boards.
First edition. A lavish record of Pease's decade of travel and hunting throughout Africa in the 1890s, from Algeria and the Sahara regions to Somaliland and southern Abyssinia. A pioneer settler of British East Africa, Pease describes his pursuit of lion, antelope, elephant, rhino, and even moths and butterflies. In 1909 Pease hosted former President Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit at the beginning of the two-year Smithsonian–Roosevelt African Expedition.
