Fitzgerald, F. Scott
Tender is the Night. New York: Scribner's, 1934
8vo. Stray spots and fingersoiling, leaves lightly toned. Original gilt-stamped green cloth in illustrated dust jacket depicting a Riviera scene, with Eliot and Mencken blurbs; spine panel sunned, with tiny nicks and some creasing at head and tail. Folding case.
First edition.
"... flashes of genius by an expert in self-destruction, ... the predicament of grace under pressure from too many parties and too much money" (Connolly)
Only 15,000 copies comprised the first three printings and the royalties earned failed to pay off Fitzgerald's debt to his publisher. Its undeserved failure was to accelerate the author's downward spiral.
