Carey, Mathew

The General Atlas for Carey’s Edition of Guthrie’s Geography Improved. Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, May 1, 1795

Folio (384 x 232 mm). Letterpress title, 44 (of 45) engraved maps, lacking the large-scale map of the United States by Samuel Lewis, as often; washed, intermittent repaired tears, and staining. Modern brown crushed morocco gilt.

Second American edition of Guthrie’s geography. This is one of the two versions issued of the first American Atlas, the other containing only the American maps. The atlas was published as an accompaniment to the text volumes of William Guthrie's Guthrie's Geography Improved, which came out in 1794-95. Samuel Lewis’ large-scale map of the United States had not been completed in time for the first edition of the Guthrie Atlas, and is nearly always lacking from the second, as here.
