After the 1897 taking of Kiautschou in China by the German Navy’s East Asia Cruiser Division, marines were taken from the first and second Seebatallions to form the new third Seebatallion. This new troupe arrived at Tsingtao, on the coast of the Yellow Sea, on 26 January 1898. They were to man the German Imperial Navy's East Asian Station, and were the only all-German unit with permanent deployment in an overseas protectorate.
