Gisela Haase, Dresdener Möbel des 18.Jahrhunderts, Leipzig 1986, ill. 37 p.267,
for a commode with comparable gilt-bronze mounts.
These offered pair of commodes with their beautiful kingwood veneer and superbly modelled and chased gilt-bronze mounts are a particularly magnificent example of the outstanding quality of cabinet-making in 18th century Dresden and an exuberant representation of the Dresden Rococo. Only a few Dresden commodes of such elaborate and superb execution have been survived.
The design of the mounts reflects the exuberance of carving in Dresden from the 1730s, such as Joseph Deibel (1716-1793, who trained as a cabinet maker and carver, arriving in Dresden from Munich in 1737. Another carver with similar facility in the new Rococo style was Johann Joseph Hackl (d.1785).
Little is known about Johann Gottlieb Hesse, it is documented that in 1771 he was appointed cabinet-maker to the court of Elector Frederick August III of Saxony.
A pair of Dresden commodes with similar modelled and chased gilt-bronze mounts attributed to the court cabinet maker Johann Gottlieb Hesse were sold Replica Shoes 's, London, 3 July 2012, lot 36.
