Description

Italian, probably Florence, 17th century

Bust of Christ

bronze, on a red scagliola base

bronze: 9 cm., 3½ in.

15.5 cm., 6⅛in. overall

The facial type of the present bust appears to depend on models of Christ by Giambologna, notably the Risen Christ cast by Antonio Susini in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. no. 63.39). A variant model of Christ in the form of a miniature bust has been attributed to Susini's workshop by Charles Avery; see Giambologna: An Exhibition of Sculpture by the Master and his Followers, from the collection of Michael Hall Esq., exh. cat. Salander-O'Reilly Galleries, New York, 1998, pp. 95-97, no. 32
