Louis Abel-Truchet was born in Versailles and studied under Benjamin Constant and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian in Paris. In the present work, Abel-Truchet creates an atmosphere of excitement by using fast, vigorous brushstrokes in the sky. Elements of the composition recall Edouard Manet's Music in the Tuileries Gardens;1 Manet was a contemporary of Abel-Truchet's and a pioneer of the fashionable genre of scenes depicting everyday Parisian life.
