Little is known about the painter Jan Hendricks van Zuylen, though he was probably born in Utrecht where his father was registered as a guild pupil in 1614. A 'banquet still life by van Zuylen' is documented in 1649, confirming his activity as a still-life painter, as evidenced by a signed work in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.1 Attribution of the present work to Van Zuylen was supported by Dr Fred G. Meijer when he saw the painting in 2020.
