Niels Peter Rasmussen enrolled in 1866 at the Kunstakademi in Copenhagen, where he remained until 1872. He painted flowers and landscapes but was best known for his animal paintings, such as this depiction of a common pochard duck. Rasmussen always signed his works and dated them to the exact day, month and year.
