This lively and informal painting gives a glimpse into daily life at a French military base. Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines is best known for his historic paintings of the French Revolution and for his grand compositions of battles and military campaigns. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1791 and in 1810 he was awarded the Grand Prix for his painting The Passage of the Danube by Napoleon before the Battle of Wagram (English Heritage, The Wellington Collection, Apsley House).1
