The present painting is typical of the style of Belgian artist Henri Voordecker, who was known for his skilled depictions of birds. Voordecker sets this tranquil scene in the eaves of a building, where pigeons have come to nest. He had painted a similar scene set in the exact same loft two years earlier, which includes the same props and is bathed in the same soft light.1 Henri Voordecker enjoyed a successful career in his native Brussels, where he lived his whole life. He received commissions from a number of important patrons, including King William I.
